The only other time I visited a place called Finisterra was while walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain, a land the Romans once believed marked the end of the world. Finis Terrae — literally, “the end of the earth.”

What I discovered at Sandos Finisterra in the growing resort town of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, was a different kind of ending: a place where busy schedules, overflowing inboxes, and daily routines quietly disappear.

At Land's End: Discovering Sandos Finisterra, Los Cabos, Healthy Living + TravelOriginally one of the first major resorts built in Cabo San Lucas in 1971, Sandos Finisterra occupies one of the most spectacular locations in town. Perched on a rocky hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the resort offers easy access to nearly everything Los Cabos is known for. The marina is just steps away, the public beach is a pleasant ten-minute stroll, and guests can easily book fishing charters, sightseeing cruises, paddleboarding, kayaking, and other adventures.

One experience I highly recommend is the complimentary morning hike up the mountain behind the resort. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, the 8 a.m. walk offers beautiful views of Cabo’s coastline, marina, and famous rock formations. It’s a great way to start the day before settling into vacation mode. As the guide will politely remind you, tips are always appreciated.

At Land's End: Discovering Sandos Finisterra, Los Cabos, Healthy Living + TravelMy room was spacious and comfortable, with sweeping views and a beautiful standalone bathtub. It looked inviting enough, though with so many other ways to spend my time, I never quite found a reason to indulge.

It’s almost cliché to say the staff were wonderful at a resort, but Sandos genuinely delivered. Team members were attentive without being intrusive, and many seemed genuinely interested in helping guests make the most of their stay. Whether answering questions about the property or offering recommendations around town, the service consistently felt warm and authentic.

At Land's End: Discovering Sandos Finisterra, Los CabosSandos Finisterra has welcomed its share of notable guests over the years. Perhaps most famously, Keith Richards celebrated his 40th birthday here when he married American model and actress Patti Hansen on December 18, 1983. Richards’ Rolling Stones bandmate Mick Jagger served as best man, adding a little rock-and-roll history to this already iconic Cabo property. Can you guess why Sandos Finisterra’s after-hours club is called the ‘Stones Club’.

Food and beverage offerings easily exceeded my previous all-inclusive experiences in both Nayarit and Jalisco. The resort features several restaurants and bars, offering enough variety to take several days to sample everything.

At Land's End: Discovering Sandos Finisterra, Los CabosOne of my favourite discoveries was the poolside Pizzeria, open daily from noon until 4 p.m. Here, guests can choose between freshly prepared sushi rolls and hand-crafted pizzas, baked throughout the afternoon. Vacation is all about balance, after all.

For breakfast, I couldn’t tear myself away from the popular Don Diego buffet. Fresh fruit, made-to-order omelettes, traditional Mexican dishes, and healthy options seemed to stretch endlessly. I can’t remember the last time I ate so well while convincing myself I was being healthy.

At Land's End: Discovering Sandos Finisterra, Los Cabos, Healthy Living + TravelThe Whale Watching Bar was something of an enigma. Perched high above the resort, it offers some of the best views on the property, stretching across the Pacific Ocean and Cabo’s dramatic coastline. Part sports bar, part sunset lounge, it somehow manages to cater equally well to guests looking to catch a game, enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail, or simply watch the sky change colours as the sun disappears into the horizon.

My stay also included a visit to Spa del Mar, located within the resort’s marina wing. Beyond its excellent fitness centre, the spa offers a full range of massage, body, nail, and salon services. I particularly enjoyed the hydrotherapy facilities, which include a co-ed jacuzzi, cold plunge, sauna, steam room, and experiential showers.

At Land's End: Discovering Sandos Finisterra, Los CabosLike much of the resort itself, the spa is literally carved into the cliffside. Several treatment rooms offer views overlooking Cabo San Lucas and the marina below, creating a sense of connection to the landscape while still feeling completely removed from it.

Like any great spa experience, my only regret was not allowing myself more time to enjoy it all.

At Land's End: Discovering Sandos Finisterra, Los Cabos, Healthy Living + TravelSandos Finisterra may not be the newest resort in Los Cabos, but that’s part of its charm. Its location remains unmatched, its staff create a welcoming atmosphere, and its combination of relaxation, recreation, and access to Cabo’s vibrant marina makes it easy to understand why generations of travellers continue to return.

Sometimes the end of the earth turns out to be exactly where you need to be.
