The Golden State is home to more residents living well into their golden years than any other U.S. state, according to a new U.S. Census report released on September 22.

California reported 10,623 residents aged 100 or older, the highest in the nation. It was followed by New York (6,921), Florida (6,580), and Texas (4,435) — the top four states where people are most likely to reach the century mark.

At the other end of the scale, Alaska recorded just 94 centenarians, followed by Wyoming (126), Vermont (167), and Delaware (197), each with fewer than 200 residents aged 100 or older.

The Census Bureau’s new report, “Centenarians: 2020,” examined the living arrangements and demographic details of 80,139 Americans who had reached 100 years of age or older. “Living to the age of 100 is extremely rare,” the agency noted. For context, in 202,0 the average American reaching age 65 could expect to live to about 83.5 years.

Global Longevity Leaders

On a global scale, Japan continues to lead the world in longevity, with 6.37 centenarians per 10,000 people, the highest rate anywhere. Italy, Europe’s leader, follows with 2.48 per 10,000, just above the overall U.S. rate.

Canada, meanwhile, ranks above both the United States and Europe, with 2.99 centenarians per 10,000 people. Although Canada’s population is similar in size to California’s, the country counts 12,281 residents aged 100 or older, roughly 15.6% more than California.

These figures underscore the growing global interest in longevity and wellness, showing how lifestyle, healthcare, and community all play a role in how long we live and how well we age.
